Then, gently, the world began anew
Then, gently, the world began anew was a unique calendar project combining the photographs of Stephen Robb and the six-word stories and harp compositions of Lyle Chan.
Every month, a Facebook/YouTube video was sent out to subscribers, revealing that month’s music, image and story.
The photographs were chosen for their power to evoke emotion and convey a story. Photographs always convey a moment snatched out of time, making the viewer ask, what else was going on, before and after? Likewise, the six-word stories invariably read like arbitrary yet encapsulating excerpts out of a grander tale. And each musical work will always sound like someone simply opened a door to a room where there was music playing, then closed the door again.
You can read the full background to this project here.
The concert premiere of this music was given by harpist Verna Lee Brown at a concert of the Sydney Chamber Music Festival. As it took place in September 2011 which was before all the music was composed and revealed, she played a selection from the then work-in-progress.
